We are already in the third year of the PlayStation 5 market and it will probably be a few more years before the successor, presumably PlayStation 6, comes onto the market. However, that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill about the PlayStation 6 from continuing to simmer.
The latest comes from YouTuber Moore’s Law Is Dead, a reliable tipster who previously revealed details about Sony’s long-rumored PS5 Pro with upgraded internals. In a recent video, Moore’s Law is Dead claimed to know with “100 percent” certainty that Sony will continue its partnership with AMD to power the PS6 and PS5 Pro. According to sources, the chip will enable a gaming experience in 4K at 120 frames per second and 8K at 60 frames per second.
To add credence to this rumor, another report from YouTuber RedGamingTech claimed that Sony wasn’t even considering vendors other than AMD to power its next-gen consoles. The PS4 and PS5 featured the AMD Jaguar and Zen 2 respectively. Before the release of the PS5 in 2020, Sony discussed switching to other chip providers, most notably Nvidia, according to RedGaming Tech. Ultimately, however, the company decided to stick with AMD for several reasons, including easy backwards compatibility and an already dedicated custom solutions team.
Possible PS6 launch window
Of course, this should all be taken with a grain of salt unless the PlayStation team officially confirms it. We still don’t know much about the PS6’s specs and launch window, but we do have a clue thanks to court documents released in the FTC’s case against Microsoft over its attempt to acquire Activision Blizzard.
In November 2022, Sony stated in documents submitted to the court that the PS6 was not scheduled to be released until after 2027 at the earliest. Last summer, Microsoft said that if the deal with Activision Blizzard goes through, it was committed to releasing Call of Duty games on PlayStation platforms for at least the next 10 years.
“In any case, this term would extend beyond the expected launch period of the next generation of consoles (in 2028),” Microsoft said.
According to Moore’s Law Is Dead, Sony has already started discussions with manufacturers for the PS6. As for the PS5 Pro, the most common rumors suggest that it will be announced this year and its release is scheduled for late 2024 or early 2025.
