Clark Gable (1901-1960) was an American actor who appeared in more than 60 films and became a Hollywood legend – hence the nickname “King of Hollywood”.
Gable won an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1935 for his performance in It happened one night He won critical acclaim and enduring fame across generations for his role as Rhett Butler in the 1939 epic historical romance Blown by the wind, in which he uttered the iconic words: “Honestly, my love, I couldn’t care less.”
In 2005, this line was voted the most memorable American film quote of all time by the American Film Institute, surpassing Marlon Brando’s “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse” as Don Vito Corleone The Godfather.
Even off screen, Gable was known for his elegant looks and sense of style. Countless photos of Gable in a suit show him immaculately clean and looking like he just stepped out of a men’s fashion magazine.
Like a true gentleman, Gable paired watches to match his on-screen and off-screen outfits. Gable owned a gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual Reference 6011, sold by Brock & Co., which he wore in the 1953 film Mogambo. It was sold by Bonhams in 2013 for $28,750.
Jake Ehrlich, who runs the respected blogs Jake’s Rolex World and Jake’s Patek Philippe World, first spotted Gable in 2011 wearing a Patek Philippe Reference 1526 Perpetual Calendar in yellow gold. The picture below shows Gable sitting with a cigarillo in his hand and the watch on his wrist. The time of recording was previously unknown.
Note Gable’s clothing in the photo: a white T-shirt and pants. This allowed me to understand when the photo was taken. I happened upon a black and white Getty photo of the film from 1955 Soldier of fortune, in which Gable starred as Hank Lee, wearing the same clothes and watch!
