Franck Muller unveils the Cintrée Curvex Ryoko Kaneta Dragon

Last month we highlighted all the dragon motif clocks decorated with Métiers d’Art techniques. However, among these delicate designs there are simpler yet equally intriguing timepieces in concept, and Franck Muller’s interpretation of a dragon-themed watch falls into this category. The result of a collaboration with Japanese artist Ryoko Kaneta, the Cintrée Curvex Ryoko Kaneta Dragon Limited Edition is an unexpectedly charming watch for the Chinese Year of the Dragon.

While many dragon-themed watches from well-known brands follow traditional styles and use techniques such as enamel or engraving to depict dragons in the style of ancient China, Franck Muller has taken a unique approach. Instead of displaying a distinctive dragon figure in the center of the dial, as is common with most watchmakers, a stylized dragon was chosen.

To ensure the stylized dragon is both appealing and intriguing, Franck Muller collaborated with Japanese artist Ryoko Kaneta to create something innovative. In fact, it’s so “new” that at first glance it doesn’t even resemble a dragon. The dial features 12 doll-like figures, typical of Ms. Kaneta’s style, each wearing a tail reminiscent of that of a dragon. This depiction or interpretation clearly does not aim to faithfully represent the depiction of dragons in Chinese culture – that is not the intent of this watch at all – and therefore may not appeal to those seeking traditional designs. However, it is perfect for lovers of Japanese art or those who simply want something a little more unconventional.

What’s special about this watch is that it manages to combine a few different styles but still looks harmonious. There’s just the right amount of complementary details and subtle contrasts to make it visually interesting.

Let’s start with the similar elements. The figures are undeniably cute and youthful in style and are complemented by the turquoise blue dial, a refreshing and fashionable color. Both aspects radiate modernity and chic and complement each other perfectly.

However, the dial also features an embossed guilloche pattern that, like the Cintrée Curvex itself, immediately evokes a classic aesthetic. Still, these more classic elements don’t seem out of place. They are executed with just enough style to create contrast without overwhelming the overall design. One reason these contrasts are well integrated may be the presence of Arabic hour markers. The font is fascinating – it has a touch of classicism yet is playful and modern.

Although the watch is purely a period piece, the movement inside is actually an in-house creation, similar to many of the brand’s movements. While some bear similarities to existing, well-known calibers, Franck Muller redesigned and manufactured them himself. The MVT FM 2536-SC has a modest power reserve of just 42 hours. However, it is not overly bulky, so the overall height of the case is only 9.35 mm. This slim profile is important to maintain the elegant shape of the case without appearing bulky.
