Guilloche Dials are an exquisite and complex form of decorative art in the field of traditional watchmaking. Featuring precise, repeating patterns engraved into the metal or enamel dial base in the shape of a rose, they are not only visually impressive, but also serve the practical purpose of adding depth and dimension to the dial while enhancing it through contrast strengthen.
The latest example of this traditional craftsmanship comes from Louis Erard. The independent Swiss boutique brand is introducing two steel variants, one with a blue dial and the other with a black dial Excellent small seconds Collection. Redesigned in 2020, this classic represents the entry into Louis Erard’s Excellence line.
The Excellent small seconds with guilloche duo both have a four-part dial. The center catches the eye with its radiant draping pattern, a light trap where the flatness of the dial deepens into evolving waves that grow from the center.
This central motif is interrupted by the anthracite hour circle, which has an a Basket Motif, with finely offset scales. The small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock displays the same guilloched Patterns in darker tones.
While the anthracite blue version has a diameter of 39 mm, the anthracite black version with a width of 42 mm is aimed at watch lovers who appreciate a larger diameter. Both watches are powered by the Sellita SW261-1 automatic caliber, which can be admired through the sapphire crystal back.
The price for both Excellence Petite Seconde Guilloché versions is CHF 2,300, or about $2,600 USD when converted to USD at the time of writing.
